Historically, the CalvaCom Group is the first French private company to
operate in the field of micro-computer based communications.
Created in 1986, the company developed a repertoire of communication
services integrating all classic means of communication - letter post,
telephone, telex, fax, applying all the new international standards and
protocols, PSTN, RNIS, X25, X28, X400, leased line.
The company's mission was to supply corporate clients a communications
utility using all delivery methods, thanks to its multiple "gateways" and
integrated protocol translation.

CalvaCom's activities in Africa started in 1987. Initially involved were 3
countries in West and Central Africa (Ivory Coast, Cameroon and Gabon). The
offer consisted of an electronic mail service with a telex refile gateway
for companies operating in the region, using the (rather primitive) X25
networks in those countries.
Progressively, technical improvements permitted the extension of the service
to a growing number of national markets in Western and Central Africa and,
since 1994 in East Africa (Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania) In 1997 CalvaCom
made its first appearance in Southern Africa with the appointment of
distributors in Zambia and Malawi.
These technical improvements included the addition of gateways to fax, X400
and Internet e'mail. trafic can be addressed through all these gateways
using the proprietory software developed by CalvaCom. This package is known
as Clicom, developed to provide total user-friendliness combined with many
advanced features such as automatic merging of confirmations with original
messages.
